When you’re no older than 4 days and less than 6cm long, you can’t be blamed for hitching a leisure ride with your parents. This adorable African spurred tortoise unhesitantly took his chance when he was placed on his 150-years-old mom’s head at the Nyiregyhaza Animal Park in Hungary.
This particular African spurred tortoise, who only weighs 25g and is 5.5cm long, is one of the eight babies born to a 150-year-old mom. Even though they were born after 115 days of hatching, they clearly still need some help getting around. These newly welcomed tortoise babies are so small that they are only a 10th the size of their mother. They are also first of their species born at the Hungarian zoo.
While their mother was enjoying the sunshine, the little ones felicitously sat on her, basking in the sun. Wildlife photographer Attila Balazs immediately took advantage of the adorable scenario and the results are absolutely stunning.

The African spurred tortoise is among the world’s longest-living creatures and also the third largest tortoise species in the world. It is a desert-dwelling tortoise who can weigh up to 175-180 pounds. Its overall sandy colors – golden skin and brownish shell – keeps it well camouflaged from its surrounding.

Their usual life span is about 50 to 150 years, so it’s quite typical of them to live for more than a century. Nevetheless, there have been reports of spurred tortoises who lived for much longer than the expected life span. Sorry hares, but tortoises are still winning the race of life by taking it slow and steady.
