This Dolphin Brings Back Gifts From The Ocean To Thank The Humans Who Feed It

Being considered the second most intelligent species of all animals after humans, dolphins display impressive social skills and communicative abilities. This is a story of one such intelligent being named Mystique. Mystique stands out among others of his kind because he has taken his degree of intelligence to an entirely new level.

This 29-year-old Sousa dolphin who lives in Tin Can Bay Nature Reserve in Queensland, Australia has developed a gracious habit of showering his visitors with treasures from the bottom of this ocean.

Tourists and volunteers from the Barnacles Dolphin Center and the Dolphin Feeding Center have a hard time deciding on which is the best out of a widely diversified set of presents consisting of pieces of corals, sea sponges, and barnacle-encrusted bottles.

Mystique’s unique behavior is a tenderhearted attempt to show his gratitude for offering him food. His consistent trips to the ocean floor to present to his human friends have earned him the reputation of a generous treasure hunter.

Lyn McPherson, a volunteer feeder at the cafe said, “He gets under it [and] if he drops it too far out, or we say ‘come on, that’s not good enough, then he gets underneath it and brings it to us.”

“We swear he has a collection waiting to bring to us.”

His behavior came out as a surprise for all those at the nature reserve. What’s even more remarkable is that he wasn’t taught to do any of it.

“Nothing surprises me with dolphins and their behavior anymore,” said Barry McGovern, a UQ PhD student, and dolphin expert. “They do everything – they use tools, they have culture, they have something similar to names in signature whistles.”
